USS Raider - NCC 42558

Old Enemies (06/11/2001 to 08/01/2002)

The captain of Starbase 93 conveyed orders to the Raider to investigate a scientific installation on Sarkona, after having lost contact with it for over 6 days. The Raider departed SB93 within the hour and arrived at the Xavix 9 system 2 days later. An away team was beamed down to Sarkona to scout the area. 2nd Lieutenant Ryu became separated from the rest of the team and found what appeared to be Borg implants and the people they were used on. Back on the Raider, a Cardassian Galor class destroyer decloaked and ordered the Raider to leave the area or be destroyed. The Raider moved round to the other side of the planet, out of reach of the Galor class, but in doing so lost contact with the away team.

On a suggestion from Lt. Phobos, the Raider launched several probes round the planet in the hope of extending sensor range and possibly beaming the away team up while remaining out of reach of the Cardassian destroyer. Before an attempt could be made, the Borg like beings were beamed onto the Raider by the Cardassians, who are controlling them. While the Raider's crew engaged them, the CDS Dik'Tat managed to beam Lt. Nitai up along with some of it's drones, and began torturing the Bajoran officer. The away team on Sarkona located Dr. Jennings, the main figure behind the experiments, and escaped in a runabout, taking the doctor with them. The Raider, with the assistance of the runabout, mounted a rescue mission for their Executive Officer, and beamed Lt. Rowland and a small team onto the CDS Dik'Tat after warping up close to it and firing all weapons, with the runabout acting as a distraction.

The Borg like drones reached deck 2 of the Raider and began causing interference with the shields, as well as coming close to breaking into main engineering. Lt. Rowland and his team managed to locate and rescue Lt. Nitai with little resistance - finding the Cardassian destroyer with a very small crew, while the Raider finally recovered it's original away team on the runabout. Acting on an idea from Lt. Yearling, an alternating subspace field pulse was generated and emitted from the warp core, directed at the cortical arrays of the drones in hope of severing their link with the Cardassian vessel controlling them, if only for a few seconds (with the unfortunate side effect of the Raider losing warp capability) - this gave the crew the chance to fire at the drones without them being able to adapt, and the Borg were quickly made harmless, but not before many of the crew had been assimilated.

Thinking their other problems were over, Lt. Yearling came up with an idea to link the two warp cores of the Raider and Dik'Tat together in order to jump start the Raider's warp core, but before he could complete the task, the engineering team began to lose contact with each other. On the Raider, the crew looked on powerless as their ship control was taken away from them, and they were being moved towards the Dik'Tat. As two engineers were assimilated on the Dik'Tat and Yearling and the rest taken prisoner by them, airborne nanites were found on the Raider, and a systematic check of all crew members for infection began. Lt. Phobos was cleared, but then became infected, unnoticed, when he cut his finger, letting the nanites direct access to his bloodstream. On the Dik'Tat, Yearling was taken to the Borg control center, at which point he managed to disrupt it for a few seconds and beam back to the Raider.

Lt. Ryu then found a large bomb on the Dik'Tat, the timer counting down from 10 minutes, planned to take out both the Raider and Dik'Tat while the Borg escaped on a shuttle stolen from the Raider. Having finally regained some control of the ship's functions, the USS Raider moved into the safest place it could with the remaining time, and then stood by to beam it's crew off the Dik'Tat if there was a problem. With an estimated 10 seconds remaining before the bomb detonated, the Raider beamed it's crew back just before the Dik'Tat exploded along with the remaining Borg, their stolen shuttle destroyed by Ensign Moore.
